Junior Golfers at Estero Country Club

ECC Blog JulyBuilding Character in Southwest Florida

48 boys and 20 girls teed off at Estero Country Club on July 11th, beginning a bright day filled with friendly competition, fun, and sportsmanship. The Junior Golfers traveled to our lush green with the Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association (SWFJGA), a local organization that is dedicated to spreading the love of the game to young men and women.

The tournament was a group effort between SWFJGA, ECC, and our many incredible volunteers who carted children between holes. We couldn’t have done it without each and every individual involved.

This wonderful organization is really growing the game of golf in southwest Florida, particularly for young women. Seeing the happy, smiling faces during the tournament really drove the importance of social sport for our youth. Golf, in particular, is a great game to grow as an athlete, as well as an individual.

The Next Generation of Golf

As stated on SWFJGA’s website, their mission is “to provide juniors with the opportunity to golf under tournament conditions while learning the Rules of Golf, build individual character, integrity, sportsmanship and meet new friends.”

For four incredible decades, over 3,000 juniors have played in the SWFJGA, a few of those junior golfers going on to be PGA and LPGA touring professionals, local PGA and LPGA club professionals, as well as many local business leaders.

That’s what it’s really about; growing in character and community. Golf is a challenging sport in both body and mind. It’s as Arnold Palmer said, “deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” That’s why it has been played for centuries. It’s a challenge that is always pushing us to be the best that we can be.

Golfing at a young age propels children into a strong social setting that improves skills, builds friendship, and promotes healthy and fun competition. Together, we are building the next generation of golf!
